Aug. 11, 1957-Morgan Rep. Albert Brewer has asked the Alabama Legislature to consider a "barratry" bill. This measure is aimed at curbing the overly zealous activities of ambulance-chasing lawyers.
Aug. 12, 1957-A resident of the Center Springs community was found to have something in his mailbox besides letters today. Sheriff's deputies found two pints of liquor, charged the man with violation of the prohibition law, and placed him in the Morgan County lockup.
Aug.13, 1957-The Hartselle City Council dealt with the problem of hogs being kept within the city limits at its regular meeting tonight. This is legal but, according to a 1913 ordinance, researched by Merrill Doss, the city attorney, owners must have 400 square feet of space for each hog. The problem of youths loitering on the streets late at night was also discussed, but legal research found this practice not to be illegal.
Aug.13, 1957-The Morgan County Board of Education has decided to start enforcing the requirement that students attend the school closest to their homes. Recently many pupils living in the Massey, Plainview, and Neel communities have been enrolling at Hartselle and Falkville instead of their neighborhood schools. Hartselle and Falkville are both overly enrolled.
Aug.14, 1957-Local residents accustomed to buying liquor while visiting Sheffield or Tuscumbia will no longer be able to do this. Colbert County voted to switch from wet to dry today.
Aug. 15, 1957-The long-awaited area premiere of Cecil B. Demille's "The Ten Commandments" was at Decatur's Princess Theatre tonight. Charlton Heston stars as Moses and Yul Brynner as Ramses II.
