Local golfers off to strong start at state tourney

Through Monday's first round of play at the state golf tournament at the National Lake Golf Course in Opelika, Hartselle's Taylor Kirby leads all area golfers at the state tournament. Kirby shot a 94 to sit in 11th place in Class 5A, with teammate Patricia Long in 17th with a 107.
In the 1A-2A boys tournament, the Falkville Blue Devils are in eighth place in the team standings. Thomas Holt shot an 85, good for 20th overall, to lead his team. Closing out the scoring on the par-72 course were Nathan Knowles (34th place, 92); Josh Henderson (34th place, 92) and Dustin Gatlin (40th place, 101).
The tournament was not completed by press time.
