March 29, 1957-Charles Legg, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Legg of the Oak Ridge community, has been selected as Future Farmer of the Year from the Hartselle chapter of FFA. Charles harvested 92 bushels of corn per acre on his three-acre plot. He also had four brood sows who yielded 20 pigs.
March 30, 1957-Folks are gradually getting used to the fact that the east-west state highway through Hartselle is now State Highway 36 rather than 33. The change was officially made last month.
March 31, 1957-A semi-annual report, covering Morgan County receipts and disbursements from October 1, 1956, through the end of business today, shows that from the general fund $190,416 was spent during this period, leaving a balance on hand of $116,027. Among the expenditure items were courthouse and jail, $8,144; sheriff, $9,139; and paupers $40.
April 1, 1957-A Hartselle man, Ferrell L. Shipp, is the new foreman in the drawing department at the Decatur Wolverine Tube plant.
April 1, 1957-An elderly Valhermosa Springs resident, Weaver Denton, suffered a fatal heart attack this afternoon while observing a fight at a neighbor’s home. The men involved in the altercation were placed under arrest by the sheriff and taken to the county jail.
April 2, 1957-Mrs. Faye K. Parker, popular English teacher at MCHS, has been named chairman of the recruitment committee for Delta Kappa Gamma, an international education group.
April 3, 1957-Local people who follow national news closely say there are rumors out of Washington that, due to his bad heart, President Eisenhower will quit the presidency before his term is up, letting Vice President Nixon take over in his place.
April 4, 1957-Hartselle author Bill Huie left today for New York City to move plans and other business connected with his journalistic work. He plans to return sometime next week.
April 4, 1957-Mayor John Burleson and four councilmen met this morning to discuss the downtown garbage and trash problem. The decision was made to go back to the old system under which merchants put their trash in cans behind their stores and garbagemen go and get. Burning of trash is permitted except in the alley back of the block between Kuhn’s and Hartselle Hardware.
