Light turnout

Poll workers at Hartselle’s two voting precincts indicated at mid-morning Tuesday that voter turnout for the Primary Election is lighter than usual.

One of the workers at American Legion Post 52 said few Democrats were showing up to vote because the Democratic Ballot is void of local candidates. It only lists candidates seeking seats at the 2012 Democratic National Convention.

As of 10 a.m., the two voting machines at the Legion Post had received 290 ballots combined. The combined count for three voting machines at Sparkman Civic Center totaled 512 votes at 10:30 a.m.

“We had 25 to 30 voters lined up waiting in the civic center lobby to vote when we opened the doors at 7 a.m.,” said one of the poll workers. “Usually, the line reaches out into the parking lot.”

It was reported that only about a dozen voters were waiting for the doors to open at the Legion building.

“Everything is going smoothly but it’s slower than usual,” said Mary Vice, inspector at the Legion Post.

A spokesman for the Morgan County Probate Judge’s office reported that voting was running smoothly throughout the county.
