City excited about first state title berth in 30 years

If you’re traveling in downtown Hartselle tonight, you might notice that it’s a little quieter than usual.

That’s probably because most of the population of Hartselle is planning to fill Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa and cheer on their hometown Tigers.

“I hope Hartselle is almost empty Thursday night because they’re all in Tuscaloosa supporting the Tigers.,” Tankersley said. “It’s the first time we’ve been in the state championship game in 30 years. It’s exciting for us and the team to have this opportunity.”

The last time Hartselle played in a state championship was in 1981 when the Tigers lost to Eufaula. They also went to the state championship in 1980.

So many current Hartselle residents, graduates and fans are planning to make the trek to the University of Alabama campus.

To that end, Hartselle High School principal Jeff Hyche is allowing students who plan to attend the game the chance to check out early.

“Students attending the game will be allowed to check out after 5th period on Thursday (1:13),” Hyche said in an email to students and parents. “If families are going earlier than that, send a note before Thursday and we will handle it on a case by case basis.”

Students will also be allowed to check-in by 10:45 a.m. while faculty and staff are expected back at the normal school start times.

Tankersley doesn’t know what the outcome of the game will be, but he’s expecting a great game and a great show of support from Hartselle.

“Our city has always supported all of our high school sports, especially football,” Tankersley said. “Friday night football is just a staple of our community.”
