DHS, FHS recognized at FFA nationals

Students from Danville and Falkville high schools were recognized recently during the 84th National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Ind.

Members of the Danville FFA chapter in Alabama were two of 44 teams participating in the National FFA Floriculture Career Development Event (CDE).

The Danville team, led by advisor Sandy Fields, was awarded a Bronze emblem. Members also competed for individual awards with 166 other participants. Sara Stephenson received a Silver emblem, Brandy Hoffman received a Bronze emblem, Alexis Culp received a Bronze emblem, and Haley Cutcher received a Silver emblem.

In the National FFA Floriculture CDE, FFA members test their knowledge and skills in the production and retailing of flowers, plants and foliage. Participants must complete a general knowledge exam on the floriculture industry, identify plant materials, and demonstrate problem solving and decision-making skills, employment and customer service skills, technical floral skills and the ability to work as a team. Teams competed at the local and state levels to earn the privilege of representing their home state at the national FFA convention.

Members of the Falkville FFA Chapter in Alabama were one of 46 teams participating in the National FFA Agricultural Mechanics Career Development Event (CDE).

The Falkville team, led by advisor Shane Bryan, was awarded a Silver emblem. Members also competed for individual awards with 170 other participants. Robert Summerford received a Silver emblem, Seth Pillow received a Silver emblem, Mary Ward received a Bronze emblem and Travis Blankenship received a Silver emblem.

The National FFA Agricultural Mechanics CDE is a competitive activity that allows students to apply classroom knowledge to real-life situations. Activities included in the event are a written exam, a team activity, demonstration of problem-solving skills, and hands-on performance activities. Areas of emphasis include environmental and natural resource systems; machinery and equipment systems; structural and energy systems; and industry and marketing systems. Each team in the event has competed with other chapters in their state for the privilege of participating in the national event.
