Council delay action of strategic plan

The Hartselle City Council will not make a decision whether it will remove the promotion of alcohol sales in the strategic plan developed through the Alabama Communities of Excellence program.

At Monday’s work session, Council President Pro-Tem Mark Mizell said he recommended that the council table any action on this matter until the first council meeting in November when the all five council members can be present at a meeting. Council President Kenny Thompson was out of town on Monday. Councilman Don Hall said he will not be able to attend the Oct. 25 meeting due to a previously planned vacation.

“I think we should have everyone here before we make a decision on this issue,” Mizell said.

City Planner Jeremy Griffith also added that he would like to have the committee members review any revisions to the plan before it passed.

Council members heard from residents on the strategic plan. Of those who spoke, only one person spoke in favor of the leaving the promotion of alcohol sales in the plan. The rest, some of which lived outside the city limits, asked the council to remove that language from the plan.

In other business, the council will consider on Tuesday night:

• Ordinance 1361 – Revision of Zoning Ordinance relating to Residential Dwellings (Introduction only)

• Approve Parade Permit for 4th Annual ALL Saints’ Day 5K Run/Walk

• Authorize Mayor to sign contract with US Army for display equipment at Purple Heart Memorial (Sparkman Park)
