City council adds $10K to fire fund

Hartselle's City Council is hoping local residents will follow their lead and contribute to a special fund established to benefit the fire department.
The council is moving $10,000 from the city's general fund into the Fire Department Special Fund. The fund was established last month following the suggestion of resident Mike Dowdy.
Dowdy said he was inspired to create the fund after reading an editorial in the Hartselle Enquirer titled "A Penny's Worth of Prevention" about the deaths of three residents in an apartment blaze and the lack of fire fighting equipment. Dowdy started the fund with a contribution of his own and is challenging other residents to take part.
Contributions to the fund are tax deductible.
The money will be used to purchase equipment for the fire department and to help with the construction of a new fire station. The city recently purchased a used ladder truck and another truck, but more equipment is needed.
Anyone wishing to make a contribution to this cause can send a check payable to Fire Department Special Fund, attn. City Clerk/Treasurer, 200 Sparkman Street NW, Hartselle, AL 35640 or drop it off at city hall.
