A friend told me the other day that I’m going to turn into one of “those people” who only talks – and posts on Facebook – about her dog.
I’m here to tell you, he’s probably right, and I’m not ashamed.
If you’re not a dog person, you might consider not reading the rest of this column.
I just recently shared with you that my husband and I adopted a blue heeler from the Morgan County Animal Shelter a few weeks ago, but this past week, we were treated to a big surprise.
This past Thursday, Dottie and I woke up early and went to see Dr. Gill and his staff at the Morgan Animal Hospital so Miss Priss could be spayed. I was feeling a little apprehensive about her being in pain, but I knew it was the responsible thing to do.
To my surprise, I got a call letting me know my new puppy has her own puppies on the way – and she is actually pretty far along into her pregnancy. We are expecting a litter in less than a month, and I’m excited – albeit a little bit terrified, as I have never taken care of newborn pups before.
I’m hoping mama’s instincts kick right in and I don’t have to step in to help very much. We have a smart girl who is house trained, doesn’t pull on a leash and knows how to sit and fetch. I feel good about our chances with the puppies.
Life has changed a lot in just the past three weeks, but my husband I are completely smitten with our shelter dog. It’s heartbreaking to think someone might have surrendered such a smart, sweet pup because she was pregnant.
I know it will be hard taking care of them until we can find them their forever homes, but everyone likes puppies.
