Bradford brings young, talented roster into 2018 campaign

West Morgan Softball Preview

Coming off a 22-20-1 record a season ago, the West Morgan varsity softball team will look to improve on that mark with a plethora of young talent during the 2018 season. Head coach Kendra Bradford will potentially send out five players who all will be in either seventh or eighth grade to help contribute to a team who has expectations of capturing an area title this season.

“We will be very young in key places on the field,” Bradford said. “Our pitching staff will consist of a ninth grader, eighth grader and an 11th grader that did not pitch at all last year. I have one returning senior – Shelby McCulloch – and some key juniors in Emari Hutto, Aaliyah Wallace and Hannah Cottingham.”

Bradford’s team fell short in the area tournament last season. The Lady Rebels suffered losses in their opening two games of the four-team tournament to end their season, something that Bradford says should motivate her team this year.

“(The area tournament) did not go as well as I had hoped,” Bradford said. “We lost the first two games of the area tournament and that was an upset for us. We had previously beat Elkmont in both games and split with East Lawrence and Clements. I feel like this year, our area is very competitive and any team has the potential to win. It will depend on who plays their best game that day.”
