Online job postings increasing
According to the Alabama Department of Labor’s Labor Market Information Division, more than 27,000 new online job postings were added during the month of June.
These ads represented a 1.8% increase in online job ads, bringing the total number of ads to over 52,000. The top three occupations for ads were truck drivers, registered nurses and retail supervisors, with over 10,000 ads being placed for these three careers alone. The average hourly wages for truck drivers in June was $19.91. The average wage for nurses was $27.53, and the average wage for retail supervisors was $20.29. Alabama Department of Labor Commissioner Fitzgerald Washington said that the overall job prospects for June were good.
“Almost half of the top ten careers advertised this month have average hourly salaries of $20 or more,” Washington said. “Several of them are well-paying jobs that don’t require a traditional four year degree. I think this information shows that there are careers in Alabama for people from all walks of life, all educational backgrounds and all skill levels. It’s important to know what kinds of jobs are in demand so that agencies, including the Department of Labor, can work together to help provide qualified employees and put Alabamians back to work.”
The top three industry posting groups were, from first to third, general freight trucking, employment services and colleges and universities. The top three individual posters were Community Health Systems, Inc., University of Alabama in Birmingham hospital and St. Vincent’s Health Systems. For those who are searching for careers, Washington encourages them to seek help.
“We’d like to encourage anyone who needs a job, or wants a different job, to come into one of our Career Centers for assistance,” Washington said. “Our trained staff can assist you in obtaining the career you want.”
