June 3, 1960-Dr. H. T. Sammons continues to recover from injuries suffered when his car wrecked following the blowing of a flat tire in a wreck east of here recently.
Fred Speake is said to be improving rapidly following serious abdominal surgery a few days ago.
June 3, 1960-Ann Carol Hogan has been tapped for membership in Omicron Nu, the national home economics society, at Auburn University. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Hogan of Massey.
June 3, 1960-Andrew A. Oden has been appointed district Knights of Pythias youth supervisor.
June 4, 1960-First Baptist Bible school began today. Mrs. Howell Hogan is the principal. VBS begins at Bethel Baptist Monday with Mrs. Ferrell White as principal. Mrs. Joe Wright will be in charge of music.
June 4, 1960-The Hartselle municipal swimming pool opened today. This season’s pool managers are Coaches J. P. Cain and Brub Hamilton.
June 4, 1960-A very delightful patio party was given tonight for Joy Sue Gibson and Joe Groover at the summer cottage of Dr. and Mrs. W. C. Duncan.
June 5, 1960-Ruth P. Huie received her B.A. degree during graduation exercises at Athens College today. Mrs. Huie is the wife of famed Hartselle author, William Bradford Huie.
June 5, 1960-Jeff Tanner, a recent MCHS graduate, left today for Tuscaloosa where he will enter the University of Alabama for the summer session.
June 6, 1960-Summer school began at MCHS today. English and social studies are the two subjects on which most emphasis will be placed.
June 6, 1960-Mrs. Bessie Summers was today named Hartselle’s citizen of the year by the Civitan Club. Mrs. Summers is a beloved teacher at Hartselle Elementary and involved in too many community projects to mention.
June 6, 1960-Mr. and Mrs. William Bradford Huie left today on a European trip. They flew from New York to London by jet and will visit Paris, Rome, and other cities before returning here on July 9. Mr. Huie recently completed negotiations for the filming of his new book, “The Execution of Private Slovik.”
June 6, 2010-The Bodley circle of the W.S.C.S. of Salem Methodist Church met tonight at the church for their first meeting.
June 7, 1960-Funeral services were held today in Hanceville for Bev Howell. Mr. Howell was formerly a member of Drinkard and Howell Funeral Home where Belk-Hudson department store now stands. He also did much to promote the cause of gospel singing during the time he lived here in Hartselle.
June 7, 1960-Charles Beene is the new president of the Hartselle Chamber of Commerce.
June 8, 1960-Starting today Citizens Bank of Hartselle is closed all day Wednesday each week during June, July, and August.
June 8, 1960-Dr. David Chandler presented a talk at today’s meeting of the Hartselle Rotary Club entitled, “Spiritual Dimensions in Healing.”
June 8, 1960-Today and each subsequent Tuesday is ladies’ day at the Hartselle swimming pool for the duration of the season. The pool will be reserved exclusively for women from 9-11:30.
June 8, 1960-Elmore’s, one of downtown’s major stores, has started a major remodeling project. Unfortunately, the five-and-dime will have to remain closed until the work is completed.
June 9, 1960-Mrs. Wilma Ruth Newman has been recently employed by Speake Realtors. She is the first lady sales agent licensed in Hartselle by the Alabama Real Estate Commission to sell houses.
June 9, 1960-Robert Byrd “Jack” Burleson died tonight in Gadsden. Mr. Burleson was a Hartselle native, a son of the late Jonathan Orr and Josephine Witt Burleson. Hartselle survivors include four brothers, Howard L., Forrest E., John O., and Spencer, and two sisters, Lillie and Clara.
