RAINBOW CITY – Following a strong start to the season against county rival Danville, The Falkville Blue Devils went looking for a win against region opponent Westbrook Christian. They were successful, winning 29-22.
The game started in Falkville's favor as Dustin Jump ran 78 yards for a touchdown on Falkville's first play from scrimmage. The extra point attempt failed which put Falkville up 6-0.
After a failed onside kick attempt, Westbrook marched 56 yards down the field, with Westbrook quarterback David Ryan charging into the end zone to put the Warriors ahead 7-6.
Following an interception by Falkville's Dustin Reeves to set the Blue Devils up for a touchdown, Devils quarterback Jonathan McNatt made a 1-yard run to the end zone. The 2-point conversion pass to Brandon Clark put Falkville back on top 14-7 at the end of the first quarter.
The Falkville defense was slow to start in the first half, allowing Westbrook's Ryan to score two more touchdowns that the Blue Devils couldn't answer, and the Warriors led 22-14 at halftime.
Falkville coach Neil Estes said that starting the second half, "We had a slow first half, but guys went out in the second half and played like they are capable."
Dustin Jump rushed for 133 yards against the Warriors. The Falkville defense also stepped up, with Steven Lindsey blocking two punts and catching a 9-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 22-22.
"I told Coach (Mike) Johnson before the first punt that I was going to block it," Lindsey said.
Lindsey's blocked punts put the Devils in scoring position around the 40-yard line both times. The second blocked punt brought about a 13-yard pass to Brandon Clark that put the Blue Devils over Westbrook 29-22.
They held the Warriors through the fourth quarter for the win. Falkville will host the Fultondale Wildcats in another region game tonight at 7 p.m. (game rescheduled due to threat of inclement weather Friday).
