The Tennessee Valley Authority is asking for the public’s help to conserve power as record-low temperatures put pressure on the power grid, according to a statement released by Hartselle Utilities today.

“As we navigate through this extreme cold weather spell, we are reaching out to our community to request their support in conserving power,” the statement read. “The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has identified the need for immediate action to ensure the reliability and stability of our power grid. As part of Step 20 in our power conservation plan, it is crucial for residents and businesses alike to take proactive measures to reduce electricity consumption. By working together, we can alleviate strain on the power grid and mitigate the risk of potential outages.

The TVA encourages a few steps to help conserve energy:

• Lower your thermostat to 68 degrees or a temperature that is both comfortable and safe
• Turning all unnecessary lighting and appliances off
• Avoid operating clothes washers, dryers, and dishwashers during this time
• Taking shorter showers
• Turning off heat in all rooms that you can
• Dressing warmer and in layers

By taking these measures, the TVA said, the public can collectively contribute to help safeguard the community against potential disruptions.
