Danville finishes runner-up in Tournament of Champions

The Class 4A No.3-ranked Danville volleyball team hosted a loaded field at the Tournament of Champions Saturday. 

Participating in the tournament were four other 4A ranked teams: No. 6 West Morgan, No. 7 Trinity, No. 8 Deshler and No. 9 Fairview, to go along with 3A No. 1 Montgomery Academy and No. 6 Carbon Hill and 2A No. 1 Addison.

The Lady Hawks dropped only one set as they defeated Fairview 2-0 with scores of 25-23 and 25-19, Central-Florence 2-1 with scores of 24-26, 25-13 and 16-14 and Brooks 2-0 with scores of 25-19 and 25-20 in pool play.

In the first round of bracket play, the Lady Hawks defeated No. 8 Deshler 2-0 – 25-23 and 25-21 to advance to the semifinals. 

In the semifinals, Danville defeated 2A No. 1 Addison 2-0 – 25-22 and 25-14 – to advance to the championship game.

In the championship game, the Lady Hawks fell to 3A No. 1 Montgomery Academy 2-0, scoring 25-17 and 25-16.

Danville was led by Savannah Free, who finished with 104 assists and 48 digs. Madison Cartee had 38 kills and 20 digs, while Madalyn Holladay finished with 35 kills and 22 digs.

Danville is now 30-19 on the season heading into the Morgan County Tournament Thursday at Decatur Heritage.
