Hartselle BOE opposes bills to repeal Common Core

The Hartselle Board of Education passed a resolution opposing two bills in the Alabama Legislature that would affect the implementation of the Alabama College and Career Ready Standards, commonly known as Common Core.

The resolution states that the board expresses strong opposition to Alabama Senate bills 380 and 443, both of which were proposed by State Sen. Scott Beason.

The first bill would completely repeal Common Core and revert back to 1999 English and 2003 math standards and prevent it from being re-introduced until 2017.

The second bill would allow school board to opt out of the new standards, impose a moratorium on adopting additional standards and limit all public schools to assessments based on the older standards.

Board members Monty Vest, board chairman, members Jennifer Sittason, Randy Sparkman and Dr. James Joy voted unanimously to support the resolution. Venita Jones was not present at the meeting.

Board member Randy Sparkman commented that the current standards are solid and this resolution shows local board support to an initiative of the state school board.

Board chairman Monty Vest agreed with Sparkman and added that she does not want to see any steps taken that will be a move backwards.

The Alabama College and Career Standards have been adopted by the Alabama State Board of Education. The standards affect math and English language arts.

The resolution will be sent to the senators who are supporting this bill as well as the Morgan County delegation.
