Oden sends Brewer back to B’ham

JACKSONVILLE – The No. 2 Brewer Lady Patriots are headed to their fourth consecutive appearance in the finals of the Class 5A state tournament in Birmingham next week.

They punched their ticket for the trip by defeating area rival Arab, 50-49 in a last second buzzer-beater in the regional finals at Jacksonville State University’s Pete Mathews Coliseum Friday afternoon.

A jumper by Emily Oden with four seconds left was the game winner. She drilled the shot after a timeout with seven seconds left and Brewer trailing 49-48.

The Lady Patriots were ahead 15-10 after one period, 30-18 at the half and 37-29 after three periods. The Lady Knights whittled away at Brewer’s lead in the final period, taking a one-point lead with 19 seconds remaining.

Savana Flack paced Brewer in scoring with 14 points. She was followed by Riley Northway with 12 before she fouled out at the 4:30 mark of the fourth quarter and Oden with 10. Cheyenne McLemore had seven rebounds while Northway and Malerie Drinkard each had six.

Shelby Beam led Arab in scoring with 13 points. Kayla Key followed with 10.

The Lady Patriots will face No. 4 Sylacauga Thursday at noon.
