Nate Orr, a senior point guard at Danville High School, was recognized Friday night for passing the 1,000-point mark in career scoring. His coach, Robert Pope, prior to the Danville vs. Vinemont, presented him with an autographed game ball.
"I was very excited about getting the award," Orr said. "I knew I was getting pretty close to 1,000 points but I never really thought that much about it.
"I consider it a big honor and I will always cherish it," he added.
A third year starter, who averages 14 points a game, Orr said he'd like to take his game to the college level.
"As of now I'm not being recruited but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I'd like to have the opportunity to continue my career after high school." he pointed out.
"He's a good all-around player and has an 'A' average in the classroom," said Pope. "He has quickness and speed and plays strong on defense. He also has the ability to shoot the ball inside, and outside and he makes his teammates better players because of that."
Orr is also one of the hardest workers on the team.
"You can't keep him out of the gym," Pope said. "Plus, when he's not playing basketball he's either studying or working at McDonald's in Hartselle as a shift manager.
"I think he definitely has the ability to play on the college level," he added.
Pope said Matt Young, another senior, is closing in on 1,000 points and should pass that mark before the end of the season.
