There’s always something going on

I made a very interesting discovery this week. If my life was happening to someone else, it would be hysterical. OK, John and I even find it funny — usually after the fact. Let me share some of the things that have really happened to us in the last few weeks.
For one thing, I know it’s going to be a difficult Monday when the first thing I hear is, “Uh-oh, it’s 6:40 a.m.” and I was supposed to be up by 5:20 a.m.. I flew out of bed and into the world’s fastest shower. I threw on some clothes and started rousting the kids. John’s flying through his morning schedule. Considering he was supposed to leave for work by 6:15, he is definitely going to be late. The kids are getting dressed and one of my little angel fluffs walk into the kitchen and plops down on a bar stool. I look at her. Well, she’s dressed but hasn’t brushed her hair or put on shoes and socks.
In that motherly why-do-I-need-to-say-this tone, “Come on Sunshine, get your shoes and socks on and get that hair brushed.” She looks at me if I’ve just grown another head and says, “I can’t.”
OK, now I’m lost. “What? Why not?” I respond. In her “boy, is my mom stupid voice” she replies, “I don’t know where the hair brush is and I can only find one shoe.” This is where I wondered about justifiable homicide. Does she think that by sitting on that bar stool that these things are just going to appear in her hands or what?
Trying to be a nice mommy, I smile and say, “Well, Sunshine, get off the stool and go look for them. Try looking in the last place you remember having them.” I really wish I had a nickel for every time I’ve said that last sentence. Then I add, “Where did you have your shoes last?”
She’s still sitting on the bar stool. At this point I’m about to lose my temper. “Move!” I command. She did finally find her shoes and we did make it to school on time.
Last week as we were getting ready for school one of my daughters comes out of the bathroom and says, “Mommy, my tummy hurts.” My hand immediately goes to her forehead. “Well, you don’t feel feverish. Do you feel sick?” I ask concerned. After all there is a nasty stomach bug going around.
Also, according to my four year old, we currently have a blue dragon living with us named Coconut. It was cute for the first few days. We heard all about things Coconut did or could do. My four year old, with the help of his siblings, is quite imaginative about Coconut. However, after several days of Coconut conversation, I’m beginning to wish Coconut would go visit someone else for a bit. Especially now that Coconut has taken over my four year old’s bed and there isn’t room for him to sleep in it. So you know where my four year old wants to sleep, don’t you? Yep, my bed. This is where I start chanting, “Children are a gift from God.”
On top of these things, there was the cinnamon toast with more cinnamon sugar than toast. There was the exploding orange crayon in the microwave.
And so as not to be out done by the children, one of the dogs has “adopted” a baby. The “baby” is a stuffed cat that used to belong to one of my daughters, but the dog stole it. Every time we would take the stuffed cat back the dog would go get it and hide it. We finally gave up and let the dog keep it. Well, at least my life is never dull or boring!
