Beef Cookoff winners

Morgan County contest pulls 47 entries in two divisions

Forty-seven beef dishes ranging from Pepsi pot roast to mini fajita kabobs and blue cheese stuffed burgers with black pepper crust to Swiss steak Monterey competed for top honors in the 2006 Morgan County Beef Cookoff on Oct. 19.
Sponsored by the Morgan County Cattlewomen’s Association, the event was conducted at the Agricultural Service Center on Highway 36, west of Hartselle. The entries were judged by Bobby Day, Robert Summerford, Chad McKelvy, Steve Amos and Joan Grantland.
Ashleigh’s Magnificent Meatloaf emerged as first place winner in the senior division. It was entered by Ashleigh Kelly, a senior at Brewer High School. She received a $75.00 cash prize and qualified to compete in the State Beef Cookoff later this year.
Other senior division winners were Natasha Sullivan, second; Ashle Parsons, third; Courtney Scott, fourth; and Whitney Root, fifth. They received cash prizes in the amounts of $60.00, $45.00, $30.00 and $15.00, respectively.
Grace Wilhite’s Beef Stew claimed first place in the junior division. She is an eighth grader at Falkville Junior High School. To commemorate her achievement she received a $50.00 cash prize. Jessica Graveman, a seventh grader at Cotaco Junior High, won second place and Elle Campbell, a seventh grader at River City Christian Academy Home School, came in third. They received cash prizes of $35.00 and $20.00, respectively.
She thanked the contestants, their parents, the judges, Cattlewomen volunteers and Agricultural Service Center personnel for their support and assistance. The event concluded with a tasting fair.
