Hartselle High grad’s voice resonates in Culligan television commercial

The next time you hear a television commercial advertising Culligan’s bottled water for home and office use the voice will be that of Hartselle’s own Ken Scott.
A 1985 graduate of Hartselle High School, Scott is no stranger to challenging audio projects. He has created radio and TV spots for many of the elite performers in the entertainment industry. They include Toby Keith, the Dixie Chicks, George Strait, David Copperfield and Sarah McLachlan. But this is his first commercial to be broadcast across the major networks and cable channels, too.
Scott is director of audio services for Tourdesign Creative Services in Indianapolis, Ind. He oversees studios in five different locations. He also is founder and owner of ScotSpots Creative Audio, a business he operates out of his home. His goal is to reach the point where he can do all of his voice-over work at home.
At 15-years-old, Scott was a typical Hartselle teenager. One evening while studying for a big test at school, he decided it might help if he read “out loud.” After a minute or so of this, his mother called him. “Kenny, why are you listening to the radio when you should be studying?” she asked. When he explained that it was not the radio, but he who was broadcasting the contents of his science textbook, she smiled and dismissed him back to efforts. Little did he realize then that he would have his first job as a disc jockey before he turned 16.
Scott demonstrated his ambition and passion for “talking” by holding down four different radio jobs at the same time while attending Hartselle High School. Simultaneously, he held part-time positions with WHRT in Hartselle, WHOS in Decatur and WDRM and a contemporary Christian station in Huntsville.
To bolster his experience he attended Davidson Tech in Nashville, where he graduated at the top of his class. His first full-time job was with WDRM.
Scott left North Alabama in 1992 to accept his first management job with Prairieland Broadcasters in Decatur, Ill. where he became a popular morning show host on WDZQ-FM in Decatur. Later, he joined a local ABC TV affiliate to do on-camera weather reports and after a year joined ABC Radio, the owner of WLS radio in Chicago. While there he distinguished himself by winning trophies in the Chicago A.I.R. Awards and the coveted Helen Cody Baker Awards. He joined TourDesign in December1999.
Today, Scott’s voice can be heard on radio and television stations worldwide. His clients include Visa, ABC, Disney, Red Baron Pizza, Clearchannel Entertainment and many more.
He and his wife Patti live in the suburbs of Indianapolis and have two teenage sons, John and Ben.
