Lady Patriots win another county title

Brewer’s Lady Patriots (23-2) used a full court defense and hot shooting from the perimeter to turn back West Morgan’s Lady Rebels, 72-48, in the finals of the Morgan County Basketball Tournament Saturday night.

The tournament title brought to seven the number the Lady Pats have won in the past 10 years. It also left behind some of the bad memories from a disappointing loss to Danville in last year’s tournament.

Brewer controlled the game from start to finish, leading 22-16 after the first quarter, 46-32 at halftime and 56-38 after three quarters. Courtney Oldacre had a big hand in helping her team maintain its momentum. She swished the net with a 3-point shot as time elapsed in the first quarter and followed up with a 3-pointer with 35 seconds left in the third period.

Despite being double-teamed throughout the contest, West Morgan’s all-state guard Hayden Hamby had 32 points, 22 of which came in the first half.

“We’re very pleased to get the win,” said Brewer head coach Ricky Allen. “Our players showed a lot of confidence in what they were doing and responded well in defending against a good team and a special player, Hayden Hamby.

“Reaghan (Harvel) came up big for us with tough defense and a career high 22 points.”

“We wanted to go straight at Hayden (Hamby) and try to prevent her from getting open looks at the basket,” Allen added. “As you can tell by looking at her stats, she was able to make adjustments and put up a lot of points. She a champion and a winner.”

“We didn’t make a lot of mistakes tonight,” he said. “I hope that’s an indication that our play is coming to a peak for the playoffs.”

Harvel’s 22 points led the Lady Patriots in scoring. She was followed by Courtney Oldacre with 17 points and Riley Northway with 14.

All-Tournament Team

Sixteen players were named to the girl’s Morgan County All-Tournament team as follows: Courtney Oldacre, Reagan Harvel, Riley Northway and Danielle, Dunn, all from Brewer; Celese Sharbutt, Hannah McClung, Haley Rae Garnett and Sydni Shelton, all from Danville; Kanesia Elliot, Quanesha Burks and Sarah Horner, all from Hartselle; Sydney Moore and Sarah Goodman, both from Falkville; Molly Thompson and Katie Barker, both from Priceville; and Hayden Hamby from West Morgan.

Harvel also received the Jane Nelson Fields MVP Award.
