Neel Senior Center is getting furnishings for its new facility thanks to a $4,357 state discretionary grant, which was obtained through the efforts of Rep. Mickey Hammon, R-Decatur and State Sen. Arthur Orr, R-Decatur.

The grant was presented to Debra Rains Gardner, Morgan County director of aging, at the center’s annual Christmas Party on Dec. 21. A new 37-inch flat screen television set, which was purchased with part of the money, was presented and installed at the same time.

In announcing the grant, Hammon stated, “Senator Orr called me awhile back and told me we’ve got to do something to help the Neel Senior Center. They need furnishings for the new building. That’s when I got busy looking around to see if I could come up with some money. Well, I‘m here today to announce that we were successful and it’s my pleasure to present you with a nice Christmas gift.”

“We knew you needed a larger TV and we’ve used part of the money for that purpose,” he added.

“We even found a stand that will match your other furniture,” he added.

“Being here reminds me of the reason for the season,” said Morgan County District 2 Commissioner Randy Vest. “We’re very fortunate to receive this grant and it pleases us that it’s being used for your benefit.”

A youth group representing Faith Baptist Church in Decatur provided entertainment, playing and singing popular Christmas carols. They also joined the seniors playing scrabble and other board games.

A covered dish meal was also served.
