A memorial service for Col. Thomas Ward Maxwell, 87, of Indian Springs, was Friday, May 27, at 11 a.m. at Southern Heritage Funeral Home Chapel in Pelham with the Rev. David Deter officiating.
Mr. Maxwell died Tuesday, May 24, 2005, at his residence. He was a native of Paterson, N.J. Col. Maxwell was the son of the late Thomas J. and Etta Ward Maxwell. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, in 1941, and was an Army veteran serving during World War II and the Korean Conflict.
During his military career, he received many commendations, which include the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal (Germany), Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation Badge, and National Defense Service Medal w/OLC. Following his military retirement, Col. Maxwell received his M.B.A. from Samford University, Birmingham.
He is survived by his wife, Jenny Rush Maxwell of Indian Springs; daughters, Ms. Diane Maxwell of Acworth, Ga. and Mrs. Holly (Dick) Dixon of Ticondoroga, N.Y.; his stepdaughters, Mrs. Jennifer (Tim) Laird of Pelham, and Ms. Christi Cole of Hayden; two sisters, Betty (Walt) VanDuyne of Cincinnati, Ohio and Ms. Peggy Maxwell of Whiting, N.J.; his grandchildren, Alissa, Chase and Mason Cole and Kim Chalmers. Col. Maxwell also leaves a very dear and close friend. Col. Cecil (Irene) Himes; plus numerous nieces and nephews.
