Week 6 Notes

No. 2 Hartselle at West Point

Back near the top: Hartselle is now ranked No. 2, its highest ranking since the final poll of the 2010 football season when the Tigers were No. 1. The Tigers held the top spot the second half of the season and in fact jumped from No. 3 to No. 1 from Week 4 to Week 5.

Defense gives up touchdowns for the first time: When Decatur reached the end zone to complete a 99-yard drive, it was the first touchdown of the season given up in the 2011 season. The Raiders reached the end zone two more times before the night was over, but Hartselle’s running game couldn’t be stopped as the Tigers got the 28-21 lead.

Tigers still in top 5 of scoring defense: After giving up three touchdowns, Hartselle’s defense is now ranked fourth overall. For the season, the Tigers have only allowed 24 points for a 4.8 average. Brantley, Linden and Maplesville, all in Class 1A, have the top scoring defenses among all classifications. In Class 5A, Hartselle is still far and away the scoring defense leader. Vigor is in second place allowing 7 points per game.

Cullman at Brewer

Problems on defense: The Patriot defense is allowing 48 points per game through its first five games. The lowest defensive output of the season so far is 37 points. On the offensive side of the ball, Brewer is only scoring roughly 10 points per game and has scored 20 each in both of its last games.

Bearcats roughed up: After only allowing 41 points in its first four games, Fort Payne put 44 points on Cullman, causing the Bearcats to fall out of the ASWA top 10. In the last two seasons, Fort Payne has scored 70 points on Cullman.

Ardmore at Priceville

Explosive offense: Priceville scored 14 points in the fourth quarter last week to force overtime against Danville. Chance Ellsworth threw for four touchdown in the heartbreaking loss. Last year, Priceville only had two games of scoring 30 points or more. So far this year, they have scored 30 points or more in three games.

Tigers struggle in Class 4A: Ardmore’s only win of the season came against Class 3A Clements last week, but in Class 4A, Region 8, the Tigers are 0-3 and allowing 42 points per game while scoring just 11.3 points per game. However, those three losses were to West Limestone, Brooks and Deshler. The record of the five teams Ardmore has played is 16-9.

West Morgan at Danville

Homecoming at Danville: Tonight is Danville’s homecoming game. The homecoming queen will be crowned at halftime. They will also have a 6:45 p.m. parade around the football field.

Offense comes to life: Danville had only two touchdowns to show for itself in the first four games. Then, the Hawk attack erupted for six touchdowns in its 41-38 double overtime win over Priceville. Caleb Hill keyed the attack with 227 yards and three touchdowns.

Falkville at Cold Springs

Something’s gotta give: The Blue Devils and the Eagles have yet to win their first game of the year. The Eagles didn’t even score the last two games while Falkville managed 15 points.

Defensive problems: In region games, both Falkville and Cold Springs have had trouble stopping teams. In the nine region games both teams have played, the lowest defense performance was Cold Springs holding Sumiton Christian to 35 points. They are averaging together giving up 45.8 points per game in those nine games.
