Hartselle School Board has interviewed four of six candidates for the position of superintendent. They are William Booth, Joe Walters, Jeremy Jones and William M. Reed.
The process will continue next Tuesday with the interview of William Burns, superintendent of Geneva County Schools, and will end on the following Thursday with the interview of S. Joanne P. Horton, assistant principal of Foley and Gulf Shores Elementary Schools in Baldwin County.
The interviews are being conducted in the Hartselle Junior High School dining room beginning at 6:30 p.m. They are open to the public.
Each candidate is being asked the same 56 questions. The questions are divided into five parts and each member of the board is assigned the task of asking the same questions of each candidate. They touch on topics ranging from school system philosophy and curriculum development to finance and community involvement.
Booth is a veteran Hartselle educator who is the head baseball coach and a math teacher at Hartselle High School. He also serves on the central office staff as transportation director. His interview was conducted Jan. 4.
Walters is the only other Hartselle School System administrator who is seeking the position. He is principal of Crestline Elementary School and previously served as a staff administrator in the central office and as band director at Hartselle High. His interview was conducted Jan. 6.
Jones was interviewed Jan. 10. He is director of elementary education for Morgan County Schools and a former principal at Danville-Neel Elementary School.
Reed's interview followed on Jan 11. He is superintendent of Butler County Schools.
The person chosen to lead the city's schools will take over March 2, following the retirement of Dr. Lee Hartsell, who has served in the position for 20 years. Hartsell will remain on the school system's payroll through June because of accrued vacation leave.
