Staff Reports, Hartselle Enquirer
The Hartselle Hurricanes are sending three individual swimmers and 15 relay teams to the state swimming championships in Prattville July 30-31.
The Hurricanes qualified for the state meet this past weekend at the district swim meet in Hartselle.
Hurricane swimmers Sarah Roark, Kayla Wilson and Faith Vest all qualified for the state meet.
Roark took the bronze medal in the girl's nine-10 backstroke. Wilson took the bronze in the girl's 11-12 breaststroke.
Vest qualified in the girl's nine-10 freestyle and the backstroke because her qualifying times were faster than the 12th place finisher was at last year's state meet. Vest won ribbons in both events.
The Hurricanes qualified two eight-and-under relay teams to the state meet.
The boy's team of Tristen Mitchell, Jamie McKelvy, Jack Coley and Galen Smith and the girl's team of Marissa Coley, Holly Hunter, Mary Filiatrault and Tiffany Pittman are set to compete in the freestyle event.
Three Hurricane nine-10 year-old teams qualified. The girl's team of Roark, Vest, Jordan Bruner and Rachel Fredricks qualified in both the medley relay and freestyle relay events.
Meanwhile the boy's team of Nathan Roark, Matthew Lawrence, Jake Wayand and Greg Filiatrault earned a spot in the freestyle relay event.
Two Hurricane teams reached the state meet in the 11-12 year-old division.
The girl's team of Katie Kohlenberg, Hayden Watts, Taylor Bean and Wilson will swim the medley relay at state while the boy's team of Brandon Gillespie, Brian Peck, Trey Meares and Dave Filiatrault make the freestyle relay event.
Four of the Hurricanes 13-14 year-old relay teams are going to state.
They include the girl's freestyle team of Ashley Stevens, Rachel Hutchens, Katrina Austin and Brianna Womack and the medley relay team of Temple Bullard, Stevens, Hutchens and Austin.
The boy's team of Michael Fredricks, Bradley Killough, Doug Teuscher and Austin Johnson will swim the medley relay and the freestyle relays at the state meet.
Three Hurricane relay teams in the 15-18 year-old age division are also going to Prattville.
The girl's team of Whitney Watts, Alex Larger, Haley Spivey and Whitney Hayes qualified in both the medley relay and the freestyle relay.
The boy's team of Tyler Watts, Dan Filiatrault, Zack Blanton and Dallas Kalber qualified in the medley relay event.
Tiffany Pittman won a ribbon in the girl's eight-and-under breaststroke while Taylor Bean won a ribbon in the girl's 11-12 long freestyle.
Neither qualified for the state meet because of their finishing time was not fast enough.
