Tomorrow's heavy hitters came out to play and learn in Coach Shane Alexander's third annual girl's softball camp. The camp focused on fundamentals for the developing softball players.
The camp was successfully run at Grady and Margie Long Park within Sparkman Park in Hartselle on June 2, 3 and 4.
The girls had to cut their summer sleep-in time short every day so they could participate from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
"It went great, and we had a good turnout of about 75 to 80 girls," Alexander said.
Instructing alongside Alexander were all the Hartselle High School softball coaches: Robin Hodges, Kathy Cheatham and Christy Ferguson.
The Hartselle High softball players also got a chance to improve their own games by teaching younger players the basics of the game and to serve as examples the girls could look up to.
The girls attending the camp were between five and 14-years old. They worked on softball fundamentals that will help them develop into capable players. The entire camp was conducted under a perfectly clear blue summer sky.
"The girls came out excited and ready to learn," Alexander said. He wants to have a softball camp running twice a year, once in the summer and once around Christmas-time. This is the third year for the summer camp and this coming Christmas will be the third year for the winter camp.
The Hartselle girl's camps are gaining in popularity. Girls, ready to get the chance to hone their skills with winning Hartselle coaches, came to Hartselle from as far as Cullman and Huntsville to attend Alexander's camp.
Alexander said that the camps do not have any sponsors yet.
"We would definitely like to have some sponsors," Alexander said.
However, Ronnie Dukes from Pepsi was able to provide a steady flow of Pepsi and Mountain Dew to the hard-working campers and crew.
The girls also got to take home camp T-shirts.
