Danville’s Lady Hawks spent four days of the recent holiday season playing tournament basketball and enjoying family fun activities in Sevierville, Tenn.

While their performances on the ball court failed to meet the success they achieved in their first 13 regular season games, they took good advantage of their short vacation, according to head coach Paul Wilson.

“The girls got closer and did a lot of fun things together,” Wilson stated. “We stayed at Wilderness Resort where the water park is located; the girls did a lot of water sliding.

“We also booked the trip to play basketball during the holiday break,” he added. “We lost all three games we played, but our team played hard and represented its school and community well.”

Wilson said the Lady Hawks were scheduled to play single games on Sat., Dec. 27, Mon., Dec. 29 and Tues., Dec. 30. However, a scheduling conflict forced them to play back-to-back games on Monday.

After leading 22-21 after one quarter, they dropped a 44-26 decision to Cosby, Tenn. Saturday.

“We hadn’t practiced in eight days and were not in game shape,” Wilson pointed out. “We couldn’t score in the second half.”

Sydni Shelton led the Lady Hawks in scoring with 6 points. Charlee Anderson and Tabetha Hutto each had 5 points.

Danville fell to Scottsboro 48-42 in the first of two Monday games after leading 19-9 at halftime.

Shelton led Danville in scoring with 12 points. Gracie George had 8 points and Hutto had 7 points.

Danville jumped out to a 13-0 lead before falling to Pikeville, Ky., 57-52 in Saturday’s second game.

George led the Lady Hawks in scoring with 16 points while Shelton added 11 points.

“It was a competitive tournament,” Wilson stated. “I think the results for us would’ve been better had it not been for the schedule change.

“Our focus now is on being at the top of our game for the upcoming county, area and state tournaments.”
