Rheagan Harvel didn’t need a reminder about two years ago.

The senior point guard was helpless, as she watched her Brewer teammates blow a 20-point lead to eventual Class 3A runner-up Danville in the Morgan County Varsity Girls Basketball Championship. She was sidelined with an injury and was unable to play.

She and Riley Northway were also teammates at Union Hill in the eight and seventh grades, respectively, and suffered their only loss of the season in the Morgan County Jr. High Championship to the Lady Hawks.

“Coach Allen never said anything about it,” Harvel said. “But Riley and all of us talked about that game. This was our chance at redemption.”

No.1 Brewer (23-1) jumped out to a 27-8 lead in the first quarter and cruised to a 65-28 win over Danville (20-8).

While Brewer coach Ricky Allen knows the importance of winning the county tournament, he reminded his team that the Morgan County Championship trophy they had just won was not their ultimate goal.

“This is important because when you win the championship or are named the MVP, it’s something that everyone will remember. You’ll see your name in the tournament program each year,” Allen said. “But this isn’t the last trophy we want this season. We want a blue one, but by winning the county, we’re just taking another step to that ultimate goal.”

For Cheyenne McLemore, this is her second time to celebrate a county championship this year. The volleyball MVP and her teammates also defeated Danville in the finals to win the volleyball title.

“It’s just special to be able to win both of them in the same year,” McLemore said.
