There’s a new book titled “Eat This, Not That,” that’s made quite an impression in my house.
The premise of the book is simple. It compares popular foods and advises you if you should choose Brand A over Brand B.
It’s an interesting book and one that’s found it’s way into my daily lexicon.
Greg just rolled his eyes and held out his hand.
I hesitated. I knew Greg would not be too thrilled about some of its recommendations.
I tried to explain to him the premise of the book was to provide alternatives to these items, which were criticized for their fat and calorie counts.
He kept flipping through the book. At each page turn, he winced.
Our favorite brand of ice cream.
Snack cakes.
Frozen pizza.
Macaroni and cheese.
Key lime pie.
All of the above were on the no list, replaced by suggestions about brands not many of us have ever heard of. Sure, we didn’t need a book to tell us Little Debbies and Kraft Mac and Cheese weren’t health foods, but seeing it in black and white is a little harsh.
And, it seemed all the “no” items were the popular brands most of us purchase on a regular basis.
I had to conceded that point.
In the end, I went to the store and did opt to make a few changes. It really wasn’t too hard. I swapped Brand X for Brand Y and saved us some calories and sodium and even some trans fat, something I had never heard of until I read this book and learned it’s akin to smoking a carton of Camels a day.
Greg surveyed the purchase when I got home. He OK’d most everything, but did raise an eyebrow at the chips. He opened them up and gobbled one down.
Not too bad at all.
