July 17, 1958-A Morgan County man, a German /migr/ named Wolfgang Kratt, is possibly a victim of the current violent Iraqi revolution. He has been working near Baghdad on a secret project of some sort.
July 18, 1958-Mary Orr was crowned Morgan County’s maid of cotton in Decatur tonight. Joyce Payne was the runner-up. Mary was crowned by last year’s winner, Sarah Ann Thompson. Other local contestants included Kay King, Katherine Dunaway, Sylvia Adcock, Carolyn Moss, and Dean Tapscott.
July 19, 1958-Cherie Ray, Sandra Hardwick, and Maxye Gibson are spending the weekend at Oak Mountain State Park, the guests of Suzanne Drinkard.
July 19, 1958-Mr. and Mrs. Frank Stewart have returned from their honeymoon and are residing at 601 Ivy Street.
July 19, 1958-Mrs. Jack Hoffhaus and daughter, Ann, are spending the weekend visiting relatives in Dyersburg and Tiptonville, Tenn. Mr. and Mrs. M. H. Broom are spending the weekend in Mentone where they are visiting their daughter, Joy, a counselor at Skyline Ranch.
July 20, 1958-Charles B. Stidham began preaching in a gospel meeting at the Hartselle Church of Christ this morning. The revival will continue through next Sunday. The local minister is Roy Fudge.
July 21, 1958-Betty Palmer left Birmingham by plane tonight on the first leg of a journey that will take her to Munich, Germany, the worlds fair in Brussels, Switzerland, and Paris.
July 20, 1958-Morgan County residents who have a taste for something besides moonshine may soon have another source for their liquor besides Huntsville. Cullman was originally a wet county but switched to the dry status during the World War II era. The area’s substantial German population is especially desirous of having legal beer for Octoberfest.
July 20, 1958-The new license plates that will be sold out of Probate Judge Cliff Almon’s office beginning on Oct. 1 have already arrived. The ‘59 tags will use blue numbers on a white background.
July 21, 1958-Coy Turney is now undergoing Army basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C. When he finishes it, Coy will be working in the guided missiles field as part of the Aircraft Defense Command.
July 22, 1958-Charlie Calloway has retired after a long career as the front-desk man at the county agent building. Mr. Calloway helped thousands of people get the services they needed for over two decades. He has three sons, one of whom, Ben, resides in Hartselle.
July 23, 1958-A new automatic vending machine to dispense crushed ice has been installed at the Hartselle Ice and Coal Co., according to J. C. Stroup, the owner.
