Shumaker earns medical degree

Shanna Woodard Shumaker, a native of Hartselle and a graduate of Hartselle High School, graduated from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center on May 25 with a Doctor of Medicine degree.

She graduated from the University of Mississippi in 2000 with a B.S. degree in chemical engineering and received a master’s degree in biological engineering from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She worked as a consultant for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for five years before returning to medical school.

She will begin a residency in obstetrics and gynecology in Memphis on July 1.

She is the daughter of Steve and Sherry Woodard of Hartselle. She and her husband Chris, who is assistant principal at Farmington Elementary School in Germantown live in Arlington, Tenn. They have three children, Mackenzie, Davis and Hattie Grace.

Both Shanna and Chris are 1996 graduates of Hartselle High School.
