June 27, 1962 – At the recent MCHS graduation exercises two top students were recognized for superior academic achievement. They were Ann Paulk, valedictorian of the Class of ’62, and Don Logan, salutatorian. (Don Logan is one of MCHS’s most successful graduates, having served as president and CEO of Time Warner in addition to numerous other high level executive positions.)

June 28, 1962 – Five Hartselle business establishments were broken into during the night last night and an undetermined amount of money taken. Main Street firms robbed were Booth Feed Store, Eastside Shell Service Station, Hartselle Wholesale Grocery, Story Furniture Co., and Tidwell Radio & TV Service. Other local firms to be victimized by burglars in recent days include Bee Line Bowling Lanes and the Ranch Drive-in.

June 28, 1962 – Margaret Gilchrist accompanied her husband, Rep. Bob Gilchrist, back to Montgomery today. Rep. (soon to be Sen.) Gilchrist is participating in the special legislative session called by Governor Patterson to deal with legislative reapportionment.

June 29, 1962 – Charles Rutledge, Morgan County farm agent, is in Tuscaloosa today attending the yearly meeting of the state association of agricultural agents.

June 30, 1962 – TVA made a record net profit of $56,160,000 during the fiscal year that ended today. Sales from its power operations grossed $109.2 million. Hartselle and Joe Wheeler EMC are two of the 153 municipalities and cooperative electric systems served by TVA. A total of 1,489,000 customers have their electricity generated by TVA.

June 30, 1962 – The new bridge across the Tennessee River in Decatur proved to be too strong an attraction for a very depressed Morgan County man this afternoon. A little after two he became the first person to use the bridge to commit suicide.

July 2, 1962 – A Cullman County farmer died today when the mule with which he was plowing got scared as thunder began and dragged the farmer, Bill Schultz, a half-mile, breaking his neck and crushing his chest.

July 3, 1962 – Alabama drivers are being urged to turn on their headlights tomorrow as a means of encouraging safety on state roadways in what is expected to be a deadly Fourth holiday.
