Danville High opens new athletic facility

This week, Danville High School opened a long-awaited athletic facility in time for the first basketball game of the season against Ardmore High School.

Principal Brian Ellis said the new facility will not only assist the basketball and volleyball programs but will give the football team more practice options.

“On the back side of the athletic facility is a covered patio area with turf where the football team can do speed and agility training,” Ellis said. “This will be beneficial during inclement weather.”

The new facility is 39,784 square feet and cost the district approximately $9,442,000, which they paid for by using Public School and College Authority funds allocated by the state. Construction began during the summer of 2021 and Ellis said supply chain and weather issues have prolonged the building process.

Ellis said the old gym, built 35 years ago, will still be used as an auxiliary gym for physical education classes.
