Honoring mothers

By Todd Barrier

In 1908, Anna Jarvis proposed a holiday that we celebrated this past weekend: Mother’s Day. She had recently lost her mother and wanted a holiday that would honor the sacrifices mothers had made. It was named an official U.S. holiday in 1914.

In an ironic twist, Anna spent the latter part of her life trying to have the holiday removed from the calendar. This was due to the fact that she believed the holiday had become too commercialized. She thought the holiday had lost its meaning and honoring our moms had become secondary. Many of us tried to honor our moms with presents, outings or just spending time together. How are some ways that Christians can give our mothers the honor they deserve?

Most Chrisian mothers just want their children to follow God, live good lives and spend eternity in heaven with God. We can honor our mothers by living this type of godly life. Obey them (Eph. 6:1), respect them (Ex. 20:12), love them (1 King 19:20), live with the wisdom they have taught you (Prov. 10:1.)

These are just a few ways we can make our moms’ lives easier while giving them the honor our Father teaches us to in His Word.
