 After a favorable start in 2021, the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 52 in Hartselle continues its Salute to Veterans banner program this year.  

 Through the program, the post aims to honor veterans who are or were honorably discharged members of the Armed Forces with banners displayed in downtown Hartselle for Veterans Day. 

 “We had a great response last year, and have room for about 19 more banners this year,” program coordinator Earnestine Doubek said. “Families who bought banners last year do not need to do anything this year–their banners will be on display. Those who may not have been aware of the program before the deadline to order last year have another chance to honor their loved ones and their service.” 

Banners will be on display on the light poles in downtown Hartselle for the month of November. “We want to thank the city of Hartselle for taking charge of the installation of these banners,” Doubek said. Each banner features the individual’s photo, provided by the family or veteran, name, and branch of service.  

In this second year of the program, the banners purchased last year will be up for their second year. New banners bought this year will be on display for two years, 2022 and 2023. If after being on display for two years the banners still look respectful, a limited number of the banners may stay displayed for a third year for an additional fee. 

 To qualify for the Salute to Veterans banner program, the veteran or veteran representative must meet the following criteria: 

•  been honorably discharged, and must provide proof of service (i.e., DD-214) or other proof such as separation papers. 
•  must have lived in Hartselle or have an affiliation with Hartselle either before or after their military service. (Veterans do not need to have been born in Hartselle.) 
  

 The cost of the banner is $135, and there is an option to purchase a smaller, garden-size banner for personal use. The Salute to Veterans program will receive applications through July 31.
