In another first for the Civil Air Patrol General Joe Wheeler Squadron of Hartselle, Cadet Jordan Heaps has been awarded the General Ira C. Eaker Award, the second-highest achievement in the Civil Air Patrol’s cadet program.

Heaps was presented with her award at the CAP’s March 10 meeting. She is the first cadet in the squadron to be receive such recognition.

The Eaker Award marks completion of Phase IV of the CAP Cadet Program, recognizing sustained excellence in all four areas of cadet life: leadership, aerospace, fitness and character. As Heaps has earned the General Ira C. Eaker Award, she was promoted to the grade of cadet lieutenant colonel and is challenged to lead and serve junior-ranking cadets not just in the Gen. Joe Wheeler Squadron but around the state, as well.

After earning the Eaker Award, only the Spaatz Award Examination remains for Heaps to conquer as a CAP cadet.

Heaps’ promotion to cadet lieutenant colonel is yet another milestone for her as she excels in aviation. Earning her Solo Wings, she is on track to finish getting her pilot’s license in the near future as she strives to become a commercial pilot.

Enrolled at Wallace State Community College in the aviation program, Heaps is well on her way and also serves as a mentor for younger cadets in the squadron.

The commander of the Gen. Joe Wheeler Squadron, First Lt. Blake Dozier, praised Heaps and her drive.  “She is the epitome of what a cadet should be like, living out the core values of CAP: integrity, volunteer service, excellence and respect.”
