Run-off election still scheduled despite pandemic
The March 31 run-off election will proceed as planned, according to a statement released this morning by Alabama Republican Party Chairman Terry Lathan.
“At this time, the March 31 run-off election is still scheduled to take place. The Code of Alabama does not give a governor or body the authority to change the date of the election,” the statement reads. “An opinion is being sought from Attorney General Steve Marshall to see if the emergency powers the governor is granted are applicable to an election. Once that opinion has been received, we will proceed accordingly.”
Voters are encouraged to vote absentee if the election is not postponed. Applications to apply for an absentee ballot can be found on the Secretary of State’s website.
A copy of each voter’s photo ID must be submitted with the application and the deadline to apply for a ballot is March 26.
