Old Cahawba receives new Regions Bank Bicycles

By Will Whaley

Old Cahawba, a historic property of the Alabama Historical Commission, and the site of Alabama’s first capital, received a delivery of six new Regions Bank bicycles for visitors to use when visiting the historic park located at the confluence of the Alabama and Cahaba Rivers.

The recent donation follows an initial donation of bicycles the bank gave Old Cahawba in 2012.

Regions Bank, who is a proclaimed loyal supporter of Old Cahawba, donated the famous green bicycles for visitors to use to explore the many trails throughout the site.

In the past six years, hundreds have taken advantage of the free use of the bicycles to explore the site.

Periodically, there are one-hour bicycle tours of the Cahawba site. Perhaps one of the most famous parts of the tour is the ghost town tours.

This 4 mile, easy-paced, guided, bicycle tour explores the abandoned streets, overflowing wells, and decaying ruins of this antebellum Pompeii. There is a fee of $8 per person for the guided tour. There is no charge if you chose to tour on your own.

Site Director Linda Derry said she and the staff at Old Cahawba are thankful for the donations, and the popularity of using the bikes continues to grow.

For more information, contact Derry at cahawba@bellsouth.net or call the park at 334-872-8058. The park’s visitor center is located at 9518 Cahaba Road in Orrville.
