Davis takes 4th at state

Hartselle, Priceville, Falkville and Brewer had individuals or their team qualify for the state cross country meet at Oakville Indian Mounds Park Sat., Nov. 8

Both the Hartselle boys’ and girls’ teams qualified for state. The Hartselle girls finished eighth overall with a score of 251 and an average time of 21:41. The Hartselle boys finished 10th overall with a score of 281 and an average time of 18:12.

Junior Abigail Davis finished first for Hartselle and fourth in the 6A girls 5K with a time of 19:16 and was awarded All-State honors. Billie Shelton finished 26th, 20:39; Reagan Bowling finished 83rd, 22:20; Macie Holder finished 93rd, 22:43; Madison Clemons finished 114th, 23:21; Jessica Hickerson finished 123rd, 23:42; Jordan Hickerson finished 135th, 24:05; Brantley Owens finished 144th, 24:34; Mary Elizabeth Adams finished 151st, 24:44 and Ivy Buchanan finished 162nd, 25:44.

Hartselle’s head coach Kenny Lopez said he thought the race went well overall.

“I thought things went well for most of our runners on Saturday,” Lopez said. “We started the Cross Country program five years ago and qualified for the state meet as a girls’ team for the first time three years ago. Our eighth place finish is the best finishing place we’ve had so far.”

Lopez said he was very proud of Davis and her accomplishments.

“I don’t think Abigail Davis would say that Saturday’s state meet was her best race,” Lopez said. “However, she raced well and a fourth place finish is a great accomplishment. We are proud to see her attain All-State honors for the second year in a row.”

Senior Johnathan Duncan finished first for Hartselle and 19th overall with a time of 16:59. Charlie Ord finished 62nd, 18:04; Timothy Ammons finished 68th, 18:11; Addison Zanda finished 90th, 18:36; Chase Barrett 122nd, 19:06; Tyler Dolbeer finished 130th, 19:13; Liam Davis finished 132nd, 19:14; Eric Rabadan finished 151st, 19:35; Matt Green finished 169th, 20:11 and Preston Smith finished 171st, 20:12.

Lopez said the boys were not satisfied with their overall performance.

“The boys’ team was a little disappointed with their 10th place finish,” Lopez said. “We had some younger runners really step up and run well, but we didn’t have our top five runners where they needed to be. Senior John Duncan is to be commended for his finish. He started farther back in position than we wanted, but he ended up passing around 30 runners in the last two mils of the race to finish 19th.”

Lopez said the team is already looking forward to next season.

“Our seniors will be missed next year, but we have a solid core of runners coming back with experience in big meets,” Lopez said. “We are really excited about the future.”

Falkville had three boys and one girl qualify for state. Drake Hamilton finished first for Falkville and 24th overall with a time of 18:19. Brian Bradford finished 66th with a time of 19:40 and Blake Bradford finished 96th with a time of 20:47. Falkville’s only female runner, Casey Barfield, finished 47th with a time of 23:13.

Priceville’s boys team and one female runner qualified for state. Jenna Cowart finished 85th with a time of 24:17. Trey Lambert finished first for Priceville’s boys and 93rd overall with a time of 20:19. Aaron Fowler finished 94th, 20:24; Brett Harrell finished 108th, 21:18; Hunter Bailey finished 109th, 21:22; Riley Goodwin finished 110th, 21:26; Zavier Cagle finished 118th, 22:13, Montana Henderson finished 124th, 23:54 and Trent Holmes finished 126th, 25:21.

Brewer had two boys and two girls qualify for the state meet. Jamie Jones finished 80th with a time of 18:24 and Matthew Ellow finished 99th with a time 18:42. Trina Badger finished 51st with a time 21:35 and Laura Dube finished 64th with a time of 22:01.
