Falkville Town Council adopted a one-cent sales tax increase at its regular monthly meeting Tuesday night.

The additional penny tax means retail merchants will begin collecting nine cents on a dollar purchase instead of eight cents beginning April 1.

The measure passed without opposition on a motion made by Councilman David Carroll. Rules were suspended to allow for immediate consideration. Councilman Charlie Gover was not present.

Mayor Bob Ramey said revenue generated from the tax increase would be earmarked for capital improvement projects, including drainage improvements and water distribution system upgrades.

Larry Madison, town attorney and municipal court prosecutor, was recognized for 30 years of service. He assumed the position of prosecutor in 1982 and was appointed town attorney in 1984.

Mayor Ramey presented Madison with an engraved plaque of appreciation to commemorate his achievement and a reception was given in his honor after the meeting.

The council acted on other matters as follows:

•Declared over 1,000 library books, court record books and other miscellaneous items as surplus property and authorized their disposal

•Approved a $2,000 appropriation to Falkville High School for the school’s softball program. The money will be used to replace netting in the indoor practice facility.

•Approved $660 for a one-year membership with the Air Evac Team, covering all 12 full time employees and members of their families

•Approved 50 plus expenses for municipal court magistrate Bonnie Thompson to attend a Court Maintenance Seminar in Montgomery June 6, 2014

•Reappointed Jane Hill to the Falkville Library Board

•Reappointed Modesta Reid to the Falkville Park & Recreation Board
