McLemore named top player of 2013

The 2013 Brewer senior girls class will be remembered as one of the best in school history.

Not only did the team win its first ever state championship in any sport with the 2012 girls basketball championship in Class 5A, the same group also led Brewer to its first state championship appearance in the volleyball championship.

One key component to that has been the play of Cheyenne McLemore, the 2013 Hartselle Enquirer Volleyball Player of the Year. She averaged 2.6 kills , five digs a set and one ace a set. She handled 519 serve receptions and only made nine errors.

The senior already signed a scholarship to play volleyball at Shorter University.

She said it was an awesome experience to get an opportunity to play for a championship in her senior season. She said what set this team apart from others is that they are a family.

“It’s just the best group of girls I’ve ever been around,” McLemore said. “We’re so close. It’s just like a family. Everyone has each others’ back.”

McLemore said she plans on studying psychology in college. She wants to be into social work like her mother did.

“I want to help people like she does,” McLemore said.

In addition to McLemore being named Player of the Year, Brewer head coach Ron Smith was also named the Hartselle Enquirer Coach of the Year for taking the Lady Patriots to their first state championship match.
