Burks’ shot lifts HHS over West Point

Quanesha Burks hit a 3-pointer with 1:02 left in the game to break a tie and lift the Lady Tigers to a 40-35 win over West Point Friday night at the Pettey Center.

Burks led the game with 11 points, followed by Alice Ann Glasgow and Shaneal Johnson each with six points, Melissa Paul Hill with five and Sarah Horner, Kaylee Shelton and Riley Terry each with four.

Rachel Persall led the Lady Warriors with 11 in defeat.

Hartselle led 7-5 at the end of the first quarter. Both teams traded 13-6 advantages in the second and third stanzas, giving Hartselle a 26-24 lead through three quarters.

Hartselle extended its lead early in the fourth quarter, but West Point rallied back to take a short-lived 35-33 lead.

Then, Shelton hit a pair of free throws to tie the game and set up Burks shot.

On the play, Hartselle was working the ball around the perimeter until Burks was left wide open on the left side behind the arc. The shot was nothing but net.

Then after a couple of failed possessions by West Point, Horner hit a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left to ice the game.

The Lady Tigers will play Monday at 6 p.m. in the first round of the Morgan County Basketball Tournament against tournament host Priceville (8-14).
