The City of Hartselle and Morgan County are planning to submit the resurfacing of 11.72 miles of roadways on Nanceford and Barkley Bridge roads for the Phase II of the Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation and Improvement Program.

At a work session Monday, Department of Development director Jeff Johnson said the project would cover resurfacing Nanceford Road from U.S. 31 to County Road 55 and Barkley Bridge Road from Nanceford Road to County Road 55. The cost of the project has been estimated at $1.2 million.

The 4.5-mile portion of the project inside the city limits is projected to be about $470,000. The local 20 percent match is $94,000.

“If we didn’t do this with a grant, it would cost the city at least $450,000 to resurface these roadways,” Johnson said.

Johnson said county engineer Greg Bodley’s office would provide the preliminary engineering services at no additional cost to the city or the county.

Councilman Tom Chappell asked Johnson to look into adding a right turn lane on the U.S. 31 end of Nanceford Road since they are considering this project.

“I think it would help alleviate the traffic problems we have there in the morning,” Chappell said. “Those that are turning right wouldn’t have to wait to turn right in the mornings.”

Johnson said they would study it and see what the costs of adding this to the project. However, he said they wanted to keep the projects smaller to help ensure that funding would be approved.

“They don’t want the projects to be too big,” Johnson said.
