Tigers send 22 to state track meet

SCOTTSBORO – Hartselle will be sending 22 track and field athletes to state this weekend to compete in the Class 5A state meet at Gulf Shores’ City Municipal Track on Friday and Saturday.

“I feel good about the number that qualified for state,” said head coach Kenneth Lopez. “They outdid themselves, and we had some nice surprises. I couldn’t ask for greater effort that what they demonstrated.

“Last year, Hartselle had two boys and two girls compete at the state level.

The two girls came away with four state titles.

In all, the Tigers had nine boys and 13 girls qualify for the meet.

Quanesha Burks ran a 12.06 in the 100m dash, giving her first place in the event.

She would run in the 200m dash as well and finish first with a time of 25.25. She would jump in both the long jump and triple jump and finish with a distance of 18-03.25 in the long, and 37-05.50 in the triple.

Reagan Bowling finished eighth in the 800m run with a time of 2:35.58.

Taylor Barnett finished eighth in the 3200m run with a time of 13:01.43.

Billie Shelton finished seventh in the 100m hurdles with a time of 17.98.

She would come back and compete in the 300m hurdles and finish 6th with a time of 51.26.

The girls 4x400m relay team finished seventh with a time of 4:30.68. The relay consisted of Haley Baker, Jessica Hickerson, Reagan Bowling, and Billie Shelton.

The girls 4x800m relay finished fourth with a time of 10:35.23. The relay consisted of Haley Baker, Reagan Bowling, Jessica Hickerson, and Mallory Faulkner.

Shelby Kaup finished first in the high jump with a height of 4-10.

Elizabeth Russell and Kelsey Rae Walling finished fourth and 6th respectively in the pole vault. Elizabeth vaulted a height of 8-00.00 while Kelsey vaulted a height of 7-06.00.

Ashton Pennington, Jessica Matthews, and Savannah Holmes grasped first, second, and third, respectively, in the javelin throw. Ashton threw a distance of 121-08.50, Jessica threw a distance of 120-00, and Holmes threw a distance of 113-03.

Hunter Grantland ran in the 100m dash and finished eighth with the time of 11.33.

Jonathan Duncan finished second in the 800m dash with the time of 2:03.08. He would later run 4:36.88 in the 1600m run and finish second again. He would finish third in the 3200m run with a time of 10:12.59.

John Paulsen also ran in the 800m dash and finished 9th the time of 2:08.18.

Jordan Frazier would run in both the 110m hurdles and 300m hurdles and finish with a time of 14.99 in the 110m with first place and 41.29 and first place also in the 300m hurdles.

The boys 4x100m relay team finished 6th with a time of 44.19. The relay consisted of D’Andre Mack, Jamal Jackson, Jaylan Jackson, and Hunter Grantland.

The boys 4×400 team consisted of Jordan Frazier, Jonathan Duncan, Steven Cleek, and Hunter Grantland. They finished fourth with a time of 3:35.09.

Jaylan Jackson finished 5th in the high jump with a height of 5-08.00.

D’Andre Mack finished first in the triple jump with a distance of 41-11.50.

Hartselle finished third in both boys and girls overall.
