March 7, 1962 – Morgan County political candidates and their supporters this morning are assessing how well they did (or didn’t do) at last night’s first political rally, this one held at Priceville school where about 300 people gathered to hear political speeches.

March 7, 1962 – Funeral services were held today at Hartselle First Christian Church for Howard Jarrett, 58, with the Rev. Connor Lundy officiating. Pallbearers were L. E. Slate, Troy Nunn, Robert Street, Clyde Blankenship, Jesse Bodley and Ed Bodley.

March 7, 1962 – Several Hartselle stores have been promoting tomorrow’s daffodil show at the Legion home with window displays. These firms include Joe Roberts, V.J. Elmore, Roberts Brothers, McCurley Jewelry, and Belk-Hudson.

March 7, 1962 – Hartselle conservation expert Roger Chapman spoke at a meeting of the Decatur Lions Club tonight.

March 8, 1962 – The daffodil show here today was a big success. Prize winners included Mrs. A. A. Clemons, Mrs. L. L. Gilchrist, Mrs. W. V. Harvel, Mrs. L. H. Houston, Mrs. A. I. Nixon, and Mrs. M. G. Vest. Junior prizes were awarded to Betty Wear and Susan Martin, Deborah Williams, Karen Vance, Celia Swafford, Pat Williams, Phyllis Duncan, and Carol McElroy.

March 8, 1962 – Several Hartselle women Democrats were in attendance tonight for their Morgan County chapter meeting at the courthouse.

March 9, 1962 – Funeral services were held this morning at Bethel Baptist for Mrs. Belle Muzzey who passed away a few days ago at Falkville Rest Home. Rev. Edsel Stevenson officiated.

March 9, 1962 – Cadet Maj. Charles Farmer, a student at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, visited MCHS today to tell the students about his experiences there and to encourage them to consider applying for admission.

March 9, 1962 – Gov. John Patterson spoke to the political action committee (“PAC”) of the United Steelworkers Union in Birmingham tonight. The nine men who are currently running to succeed Patterson as governor are hoping for the union support that he had when he was elected in ’58.

March 10, 1962 – Sylvia Kay King and Dewey Bowes Channel were married this afternoon at Hartselle First Methodist Church. Beautiful wedding music was performed by Robert Stephenson accompanied at the organ by Mrs. Coy Stephenson. Gail King served as maid of honor. Bowes’ best man was Don Summerford. Immediately after the ceremony and reception, Mr. and Mrs. Channel left for their honeymoon destination, Silver Springs, Fla. On their return, they will make their home in Auburn.

March 10, 1962 – Several of his strongest supporters drove down to Montgomery tonight for the formal kickoff of the George Wallace campaign for governor at Garrett Coliseum. Wallace has been running practically non-stop since losing to John Patterson in the last election. In his speech Wallace said he would go to jail if necessary to maintain segregation. He is taking a much stronger position on this issue than he did in his first race.

March 12, 1962 – Willard Nelson, a Hartselle native and son of former Mayor Steve Nelson, is the new treasurer of the Decatur Chamber of Commerce. He is also treasurer of Morgan County United Fund.

March 13, 1962 – Michael Harrison (Mike) Cost, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Cost of Hartselle, and Alma Loraine Williams, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Williams of Citronelle, announce their engagement. Mike is an MCHS grad, attended Florence State formerly, and is now enrolled at Clarke Memorial College in Mississippi. Mike and Alma plan to be married on July 14 at Bethel Baptist in Citronelle.
