Scouts test racecar skills in Pinewood Derby

Cub Scouts from the Hartselle area put their building and racing skills to the test during the Pinewood Derby on Saturday.

Matthew Tucker, the who was the winner of the race, said the key to his success was the wings on his Speedy Penguin racer.

“Those wings helped me get a push down the track and finish fast,” Tucker said.

The reason why Tucker built his in a penguin was a because of his love for the movie “Happy Feet 2.”

“That’s my favorite movie,” Tucker said.

Grayson Crawford also did well in the races, coming in second place. He said the key was putting more weight in the back.

“You want it to be bigger in the back because it goes a lot faster,” Crawford said.

The following Tucker and Crawford were 3rd place – Tanner Kay; 4th place – Ethan Armes; Turtle Race Winner – Michael Woods; and Judges Choice Award – Zeb Green

Other category winners are Webelos Most Creative–William Mayfield; Webelos Best of Show – Ashton Johnson; Bear Most Creative–Jay McElwain; Bear Best of Show – Gaelin Pleasant; Wolf Most Creative – Matthew Haskins; Wolf Best of Show – Aaron Barley; Tiger Most Creative – Drew Cline; and Tiger Best of Show – Brandon Crawley.
