Tigers improve to 4-0 in area

Hartselle shot 57 percent from the field and had all but two of its players score in a 60-51 win over Brewer to earn the regular season sweep.

The win keeps the Tigers unbeaten in area play. If Hartselle wins at Cullman Tuesday night, the Tigers can clinch home court advantage in area tournament.

Head coach Keith Wright said his team is continuing to improve despite not having much practice time over the last month. The Tigers played its first game exactly one month ago Friday and have played 15 games over the last 31 days.

“This is our 15th game and only our fourth home game,” Wright said. “We’re still trying to get into basketball shape, but our guys have continued to improve through the season.

“It’s great to earn the regular season sweep over Brewer. It’s a big rivalry game for our guys. We didn’t play our best on defense, but we played well enough to get the win,” Wright added.

With the game tied 6-6 midway through the first quarter, Hartselle outscored Brewer 11-5 over a five minute stretch ending around the six-minute mark of the second quarter to take a 17-11 lead and a 27-22 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, Hartselle stretched that lead to 29-40 late in the third quarter, but Brewer came back and cut the lead to 42-35 at the end of the third quarter.

Hartselle stretched the lead to as many as 12 in the fourth quarter before cruising to the nine-point win.

Timbo Slaten led the team with 23 points on 9 of 12 shooting along with 6 rebounds. Aaron Wooley was also 5 of 7 from the field to score 11 points followed by Prestyn Wallace and Thomas Flieschman with 8 each. Flieschman also added 8 rebounds. Colesten Thompson added a pair of 3-pointers for 6 points while Phillip Summerford and Preston Adams chipped in 2 points each.

“Every night, someone different is stepping up to lead us that night,” Wright said. “Tonight, it was Timbo Slaten. Colesten Thompson also came off the bench and hit a couple of big threes for us… We like to have get three guys in double figures and we almost did that again tonight. We put up a good number, but I think we’re capable of scoring more.”

Brewer was led by Cody Benitez and Jalen Chatman with 13 points apiece followed by Jeffrey David with 11 points. The Patriots also hit 13 of 14 free throws and was 8 of 22 from 3-point range.

The Tigers’ next game is Saturday against Priceville. The varsity girls will play at 4:30 p.m. followed by the varsity boys at 6 p.m.
