Lady Hawks split games, boys get first win

The Danville Lady Hawks split their games with Clements and Falkville while the Danville boys basketball team picked up its first win of the season last week.

The boys (1-7) fell to Clements 59-32 but rebounded to beat Falkville 42-40. The Blue Devils beat Danville back in November.

Last Tuesday, the Lady Hawks traveled to Clements and lost 51-46. The game started well for Danville, as the Lady Hawks raced to a 17-9 1st quarter lead.

Seniors Hannah McClung and Haley Rae Garnett combined for 15 of Danville’s 17 points. A 5-0 run to start the 2nd period extended the lead to 22-9.

The Colts, behind post player Daneisha Malone, then made a run of their own to tie the game at the half (27-27). Malone would finish with 21 points and 26 rebounds and, even more amazingly, she did so without ever committing a foul. In fact, Clements was only called for four fouls the entire night.

The Colts took a 37-33 lead into the fourth and would eventually get the lead up to ten (43-33) early in the final quarter. Danville was able to cut the lead to three (49-46) late in the 4th but back to back turnovers kept the Hawks from getting any closer.

Statistical leaders for Danville included McClung with 12 points and Garnett with 9. Celese Sharbutt had 7 rebounds while Sloan Lindsey had 6. Sydni Shelton led with 4 assists. Shelton also had 3 steals, as did McClung.

On Thursday the Lady Hawks took a 55-33 road win over Falkville. Once again Danville got going early, taking a 19-8 1st quarter lead on the strength of 5-of-10 shooting from behind the 3-point line.

Four different Lady Hawks hit threes, with Garnett knocking down two, while Shelton, Sharbutt and Kira Hopper each hit one. Danville took a 31-17 lead into the locker room. The Lady Hawks opened the 3rd period on a 7-1 run to take its largest lead of the game (40-18).

Falkville would get no closer than 14 the rest of the way. For the game, Danville shot 52 percent (11-of-21) from two-point range and 35 percent (7-of-20) from behind the three-point stripe. Garnett and Sharbutt led the Lady Hawks with 14 and 12 points respectively, while Shelton added 9. Sharbutt also had 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. Danville is now 6-5 on the season.

The Hawks will host Elkmont Friday night. The girls will tip off around 6:30 with the boys game following.
